Kazakhstan's leader confirms ‘unconditional’ desire in creating long-term peace in Ukraine
According to a statement from the Kazakh presidential press service Akorda, Tokayev emphasized Kazakhstan’s respect for Ukraine’s people, history, culture, and language, and highlighted the importance of resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a balanced, rational way that preserves Ukrainian statehood.
Tokayev noted the complexity of the territorial dispute, describing it as one of the most challenging issues in international relations, but stressed that the primary goal should be ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and security with strong international guarantees.
Zelenskyy later called the conversation “good and substantive,” thanking Tokayev for Kazakhstan’s support of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He cautioned against treating any nation as mere “territory,” warning that such actions could set dangerous precedents.
The discussion comes amid proposals from US President Donald Trump suggesting potential territory swaps between Russia and Ukraine as part of a ceasefire deal, with a planned meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled in Alaska for August 15. Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine’s Constitution defines its territorial integrity, and no land will be ceded to occupiers.
